Dray Pappi: Playing With Sound is the Real Power Move

Dray Pappi is a rising Nigerian artist whose versatile sound defies easy categorization. He began making music in 2007 and launched his professional career in 2015. Influenced early on by hip‑hop icons like Lil Wayne and 2Pac, Dray Pappi burst onto the scene with his standout singles like “Oje” “Follow Me Dance” and “Closer,” all infused with Afro‑dance energy. 2.png

Ever the musical chameleon, Dray Pappi says: “I like to say I am very experimental, I do everything. But I would call myself an afro-fusion artist.” He elaborates, “I take a fusion of different sounds, combined with afro beats to make one sound. My next single will have heavy elements like rock in it. I could do afrobeats today and trap tomorrow.” sctn 5.jpg

This genre-fluid approach has resulted in a catalog rich with Afrobeat, hip‑hop, trap, all unified by a melodic sensibility: “I don’t like to be boxed into one particular sound… I like to work with melodies a lot.”

Dray Pappi is equally expressive about his emotional connection to music: “Music is the only way I can express how I’m feeling. It makes me feel more confident and alive.” He’s also a sports enthusiast, admitting he’d be a footballer if not an artist. 4.png Off‑stage, his words of wisdom speak to his emerging leadership among Nigeria’s youth: “I want young artists to be confident, believe in themselves. Keep it locked in and don’t lose focus.”

With each new release, from the energetic Oje to soulful introspections, Dray Pappi proves he can’t single out a favorite: “I can’t decide on which of my music is my favorite because each one is better than the next.” As a self‑described afro‑fusion shapeshifter, he’s positioning himself as one of Nigeria’s most intriguing musical exports. 5.png
