London Grit, Lagos Heat: The World of Luwa MP4.

In a laid-back yet insightful sit-down with Section Studio, rising artist Luwa MP4 opened up about his beginnings in music, the unlikely influence of fashion on his sound, and how his identity continues to surprise people.

Luwa revealed that his earliest experiments with music started on his phone. But everything changed when a friend took him to an actual studio. “I liked how I sounded”, he said. That experience was the spark that made him decide to pursue music seriously.

He also spoke on how growing up between Lagos and London shaped the kind of artist he’s becoming. In London, he was inspired by how people boldly started their own creative ventures without waiting for permission. “Seeing people in London just start their own thing with no fear”, he explained, encouraged him to bring that same energy into the Nigerian music space. Something people find unexpected? His roots. “When people hear my music and find where I’m from, they’re like, huh?” he shared with a laugh, referring to his hometown of Ibadan. It’s a detail that seems to challenge assumptions and add to his unique identity.

Surprisingly, what Luwa wears also plays a role in his creative process. “What I’m wearing affects my mood when I’m making music”, he admitted. If the outfit feels too laid-back, he notices it impacts his energy in the studio. “Sometimes I wear boots just to record", he added, hinting at how even small details feed into his performance. The interview gives a glimpse into an artist who’s as thoughtful as he is daring—someone shaping his lane with intention, and looking good while doing it.
